Welcome to December's edition of sdesign1's Business Support Bulletin.
This month we have provided you a how to guide for the insertion of
videos on to your Website. Of course, we have included all of the
networking events that will be taking place in and around the
North-West between now and December.

How to….Add Videos to your Website:
Adding videos to your Website is as easy as adding any other content on
to the site – once you know how! It will add much more value than just
plain text and offers visitors another way to consume the content of
your site. In fact in some ways it’s easier than adding text as you
don’t have to work out what to write. The addition of videos can
transform a dull static Website into a dynamic and exciting media rich
source of information that will encourage users to repeatedly visit
your site.
We recommend adding a video to your site via a video sharing Website
such as YouTube. This takes all the bother of finding embed code away
for you and makes embedding a video as easy as a cut and paste action.
We have simplified the process into a few easy steps for you:
-
Record your video using a camcorder, digital camera, mobile phone, any other recording device.
-
Convert it into an acceptable format (e.g mpeg). We use free software downloaded from www.AVS4You.com
to convert our DVDs. However, there is other software available – this
one just happened to be one of the first we came across, didn’t cost
the earth and worked.. By converting into an mpeg file you will
compress the video into a smaller file (for instance YouTube allows a
maximum of 1 GB). Conversion and uploading to a video sharing site also
means that your video can be viewed by 95% of users without having to
choose between RealTime Player or Windows Media Player or QuickTime.
Consider this: some people don’t even know what those are! They also
get it wrong.

- Upload
your video to a video sharing site. Here are a few for starters(you may
need to register with some sites before you can begin uploading
videos):

- There
is an option on most video sharing sites to make your video public or
private depending on whether you want your video to be solely watched
by the people you know (see Fig 1.1). Once it has been uploaded
navigate to the page which displays the video and you will see a field
which contains the ‘embed’ code.

be found once a video has been uploaded successfully
- Copy
the code given once the video has been uploaded and add this link into
the HTML code of your site. This sounds a bit technical but it’s just a
question of finding a spot on your page where the video needs to go and
pasting in the code. If you are using a WYSIWYG (what you see is what
you get) you will need to click on a tab called ‘html’ or ‘source’ so
that you can paste code in.
Fig 1.4 shows how this is done
using the Drupal Content Management System. Fig 1.6 shows you how to
embed your code for the Wordpress Content Management System, as the
process is slightly different.

editor will appear which is where the 'embed' code needs to be pasted
in to

Administrators need to remember to save or publish the page on they
have pasted the embed code into the HTML or all of the changes will be
lost
