Add a MIME TYPE for Flash Video in IIS

Add a MIME TYPE for Flash Video in IIS - brought to you by sdesign1 - IIS specialists

When you are hosting a website on a windows server (using IIS) you may want to host flash videos on your website. You have to make an amend to the setup of the server to do this. The article requires that you have access to your windows server.

To add the MIME Type for flash video, do the following:

  • Load the IIS Console on your server - Start > Run > Type in "inetmgr" and click "Ok"
  • Click the "+" next to your server name, then on "Web Sites" until you reach the site you intend to  add the MIME Type to.
  • Right click and select "Properties"
  • Under HTTP Headers Tab, select "File Types" under the MIME Map section and select "New"
  • Type ".flv" as the associated extension and "video/x-flv" as the content type

You will now be able to view flash videos as you have added the MIME Type to the site.
