Upgrading Joomla from 1.5.x to 1.5.x - brought to you by sdesign1 - Joomla specialists

This article gives you instructions on how to upgrade your current Joomla installation to the latest version. You will need FTP access to your webserver in order to upgrade your installation.

It is vital that you keep your content management system upto date in general. New versions are often released to increase security, increase compatibility and functionality of your website. In this article we will provide you with basic instructions on how to upgrade your Joomla website.

Joomla 1.5 is the latest full version of Joomla, but there are regular updates to upgrade your site to version 1.5.x (with the latest being 1.5.18).

You can check what version of Joomla you have when you go to the administrator panel, in the top right it will say Version 1.5.17 (for example).

Before you upgrade

It is wise to backup your database and a current copy of your files. Just incase there is some incompatibility between the latest versions of Joomla and your current site.

Use a tool like phpmyadmin to perform these functions. These often come embedded with CPanels if you have purchased a commercial hosting plan.

• Select your database
• Click Export
• Click "Ok"

Now you should download the SQL file of your database. Keep this in a handy place and labelled well - incase you need to use it in the future.

Also make a copy of your files and folders and store these in a safe place.

Steps for Upgrading

To upgrade you need to:

• Download the latest upgrade file for version 1.5.x
• Unzip the file and copy the folders contanied.
• Paste these over your current site files on your computer
• Upload the affected files and directories that have been pasted over.

Now when you go to your site and log in, you should see your Joomla version has been changed to the latest version.
