Writing Easy to Read English.
Below is some advice on writing easy to read English. If you can follow the points below then more of your pages will be read and by more people!
- Use words that everybody uses all the time and not just where you live.
- Use numbers like 1 and 2 instead of writing numbers out – like one and two.
- Write in short sentences. Just have one idea in each sentence.
- Use active verbs. Verbs are doing words. They describe what someone does. For example Garry loves Liverpool not Liverpool is loved by Garry.
- Use full stops. Try not to use other punctuation.
- Use bullet points to help break up large amounts of text. Keep bullet points simple.
- Do not use abbreviations. Use 'For example' and 'do not' rather than 'e.g.' and 'don’t'.
- Do not use jargon.
- Write a summary at the beginning.
- Do not use too many words. Think about what your reader really needs to know. Provide links to more detailed information.
- Use a Sans Serif font - that means letters without squiggly bits, for example Arial and Verdana.
